Linum usitatissimum

DSC_6727 DSC_6733 DSC_6760\

Everything in this outfit is linen [apart, obviously, from the accessories (belt, bag, shoes), which are all leather]. I used to hate linen since it wrinkles so easily, but I'm falling in love with it.

Honestly, it's a love affair that was probably subliminally planted into my psyche, since linen has been appearing more and more in fashion in the past couple years (probably just as a function of the 90s rebirth). Independent of that though, linen legitimately rules.

I have very thoughtfully and deliberately compiled a list ( = googled + copied + pasted) of some of the reasons linen is wonderful and interesting and nice and good:

  • Linen, made from flax, may be the oldest textile in the world.
  • While only the very best fibers are used by the linen industry, no part of the flax plant is wasted; the left over linseeds, oil, straw and fiber are used in everything from lino and soap to cattlefeed and paper. Few products are so efficiently used as flax.
  • The production of linen uses five to twenty times less water and energy than the production of cotton or other synthetic fabrics. Linen fabrics are biodegradable and recyclable.
  • Linen is virtually lint free, non-static, non-allergenic, naturally stain AND insect-repellent and gives UV protection.
  • It looks purdy.

  1. I am a big fan of linen, I recently thrifted some silk/linen blend dresses and they are niceee. Those shorts are brilliant, love the stripes. Thanks for the facts as well. Good to learn it is ecologically superior too.

  6. I love every piece of this outfit! Especially the shoes and the shorts. I used to dislike linen as well.. for me it was the weight/feel of the fabric. Now I own about 4 linen pieces, all thrifted, and they've become some of my favourites!

  8. Did you add that it looks purdy? Or was that from google too? HAH! Just kidding. I also love linen! And I love that top! So awesome.

Also how have you been adjusting to wearing glasses all the time? They really suit you. Were you growing out your fringe before you got them? I've had glasses for ages but I can never decide whether a fringe is too much or just perfect with them. Sigh. Sometimes they bother me. Other tmes I'm all like they ARE me! (in a good way).

  13. Those shorts are adorbz, and I love your top knot. I had no idea linen was so awesome, haha!

By the way, I love your last post about what you're doing with all of your clothing. When you said, "The truth is though, I have a lot of clothes (and stuff-- I have a lot of stuff too). And I'd like to overcome this thing I have where I have all this stuff and where I base my life around buying/having/doing things with, in, and around said stuff purely for the sake of interacting with the stuff." That REALLY hit home with me. I am way too materialistic and so much of my life revolves around stuff and things. And I want to start steering away from that. Thanks for the inspiration, Julia, and way to find ways to stay accountable. :)
