Blue Velvet

These are our porch people.

Three things:

1.  My shirt and shoes are both velvet! And they're both blue. Hence, the title of this post is not actually an homage to the 1986 movie, Blue Velvet (mostly because I've never seen it!), but really just an unimaginative physical description. I've heard repeatedly that this movie is rad though, so maybe I'll watch it. Also I image.googled Blue Velvet and this image came up:

...so I guess now I have to watch it (??).

2.  I've been loving my "ombre" hair (in quotations because, though it was totally unintentional, I frequently get asked how I did it) these past 6 months or so, but I'm afraid I may have to chop it off soon. The lighter colored bits at the end have been through HELL (back when I was bleach blonde I would bleach my hair once every 3 weeks) and they are fried (see: first photo of this post). Siiighhh. And I so meant to grow my hair down to my waist.

3. One day recently I woke up and looked in the mirror and I just looked...old. Well, not old, but older. It's like it happened overnight. All of a sudden I've got bags under my eyes and laugh lines (which I more likely acquired frowning) and little lines between my eyes (whatever those are called). Obviously I still look quite young- I mean, I'm only 23. But there's something strange about really feeling like you're still 16 and then seeing any kind of lines on your face at all. My mother, who's 60 years old, once said she still feels like she's 20 on the inside- evidence that this feeling never really goes away. Man, the aging process is a powerful and confusing thing.

  3. I love your shirt! And my hair is unintentionally ombre'd, as well! Just the result of sheer laziness and a general dislike of hair maintenance. Looks lovely on you, though. :)

  4. I remember suddenly finding lines under my eyes at 24... and while it shouldn't be a big deal it totally sent me into a tailspoin. I thought "What? Surely we're not supposed to get lines until we're in our 30s..." Mega unfair. Not that I notice them on you, or anyone else. Anyway, luscious blue velvet, reminds me of some of my 90s children's clothes, in a good way. : )

  6. Such a cute and put together casual look. I bet the shirt has to be the comfiest and softest piece of clothing EVER! Your hair does look quite stunning, even if it is quite unintentional.

  8. I love this outfit! I love texture and the fact that you are in all velvet is awesome! I love your hair! You have a California-beach-wind-swept look that my hair will never achieve. You are so pretty!

  9. i don't think that ever does go away, just take care of your body while you can i guess. we only get one don't we.

  10. love your look and that beautiful velvet top. and I know that feeling, when you wake up one day, look in the mirror and suddenly see all the lines in your face.

  11. Double velvet, that is pretty luxurious. I like when casual clothes have interesting textures, it just lifts a basic outfit into something a bit more special. And the aging thing... I felt like that when I turned 25, but I guess we just have to learn to enjoy it.

  12. You are so pretty!<3 I don't own anything velvet, you convinced me that I need some in my closet. X

  13. About #3 I know exactly what you mean! I turned 27 last year and it just feels so strange. In my head I keep saying "but I've just turned 20, how is this possible?" i thought i was getting bags under my eyes, but i was just using make up that was too pale for me. Maybe try a little blush and make sure to get lots of sleep!

Love the blue color on you!

  14. Totally agree with number 3! Not for you of course, but for myself! Actually, I consciously thought of it a few hours ago at work when I was thinking of smile lines. Then i realized i slightly frown at my computer screen, and that unfortunately I am probably more like to have lines from that than smiling! This must change!

  16. ^Oops school account.
I love the double velvet and those awesome trousers.
I also worry about lines on my face. Sometimes I wonder what's the normal amount of wrinkle on anybody's face... Like, for your face to be flexible. If that makes any sense at all. I can't remember if I ever didn't have any sort of faint lines under my eyes or on my forehead. I'm pretty sure we just see these things about ourselves more than other do, though.

  17. Julia! First off, the porch people photo made me feel soooo weird. Had the exact same one in my house growing up, haven't seen it in at least a decade though. In my childhood mind that was a statue carved of me and my brother. Obviously it was something my mom bought at a home decor store and was probably mass produced. Funny. In reference to #3, I totally feel ya. The one that really gets me is the weird line in between my eyebrows. It's fairly new, and apparently I make the expression that causes it constantly, even worse in my sleep. Somehow though, I don't know what or why that expression is all about. Anyhow...

  19. Yes, you deeeefinitely have to watch Blue Velvet... it's beautiful (even with the gross ear). And you look adorable as always, I love the mix of blues! You make me want to give pants another try. ;)

  20. You are one hot chick, lady!!! I love the blue velvet top!! And I don't see any of those lines you speak of (in photos or real life). Sometimes I get those when I wake up and decide they are wrinkles imprinted on my face from my pillow case. And then I slather on the burts bees radiance cream. For good measure of course ;)

  21. i never knew your hair was that looong. and i highly recommend blue velvet.as for wrinkles, i've got this deep forehead line that i never seemed to notice before (i am also 23)...but i subbed for a class full of high school kids and all day i heard "how old are you?", "you look so young!", "are you, like, 19?"....flattering??? maybe. ;)

  22. OMG I just discovered your blog and I've got a new blog crush! Thanks for following me on Pinterest :)

Btw, I really enjoyed reading your Jan 26 post. I sometimes feel like that too, but I don't think there's anything wrong with having a hobby. I mean some people by fast cars for a hobby, surely a bunch of clothes and a fashion blog is not worse than that? Anyway, thanks for sharing that!

  23. Your ombre hair is very cool! I also really love those pants, and the velvet! You have a great look.

  24. natural ombre hair is always the best kind! if you hate your ends, you should try using a glaze to even out the color. i've used some from a salon quality supply store that's low in peroxide and ammonia. i think it's by revlon, but i could be wrong... color hq or something like that. it always helps me keep away from a trim for at least a month or two!

and if you feel old now, wait until you're almost 28 and you start thinking about buying crazy eye creams and anti aging products. i think you look great and let's be honest, we're our own worst critics.

  28. I know what you mean about looking in the mirror and thinking that you look old. It's kind of freaky... noticing lines and such. Ah, I have a feeling the ageing process is going to drive me insane. Especially because I'm a hypochondriac. Anyway, I just found your blog and I've been looking through it. It's nice :)

  32. blue velvet is incredible, but definitely be in the mood for weird..... though, if you like wearing the fabric regularly, maybe you have a natural proclivity for the slightly off-kiltered as it is.

are those shoes ferragamo? i have seen some that look identical in brown.
